Department of Sociology of Religion

1. Sociology of Religion

Sociology of Religion is the study of the relation between religion and social structure, and between social institutions and processes. It examines religious groups, beliefs, acts of worship, and practices, as well as the chronology of changes observed in these religious matters under various sociological conditions. It also records the characteristics and directions of these changes. Quantitative and qualitative studies carried out in the Department of Sociology of Religion shed light on the nature and development of religious life in Turkey, including its sociological background in the history of Turkey. Sociology of Religion embraces interdisciplinary scholarly approaches and cooperates with other human sciences. Hans Freyer, Mehmet Taplamacıoğlu, Mehmet Karasan, M. Rami Ayas, and Münir Koştaş are among the distinguished professors in the history of the Department.
